Welcome to Joan Embery's Pet Health Safety Resource Center

Pets bring joy and companionship into our lives. But pets require more than just love from us. They require a nutritious diet and an environment that is clean, safe, and mentally stimulating. Perhaps most of all, they require preventive health care to ensure a good quality of life and access to veterinary care when they are injured or ill.

This Website introduces you to a new resource that you can use to help keep your pets safe. Click on the "play" button to the right to hear a message from me. You can also download entire chapters from the new Merck/Merial Manual for Pet Health to the right.

Table 25: Poisonous Houseplants and Ornamentals  - Pets often chew on or ingest household plants, which can result in poisoning. Houseplants vary in their degree of toxicity. Inquisitive puppies and kittens tend to mouth or chew almost everything, and pets of all ages explore changes in their environment. Special care may be needed during the holidays, when pets commonly chew the leaves or ripe berries of plants that are placed in the home as decorations.

Chapter 76: Emergencies provides a complete list of what should be included in a basic first aid kit for animals.

Chapter 83: Travel With Pets describes adequate planning and preparation needed to help make traveling less stressful for people and their pets.
